What have you obtained? You have acquired the truth, since you know the “only true God” by receiving the words of Jesus Christ. The riches of eternal life have been promised to you. (John 17:3) The result of this knowledge of the truth is that you now hold no stock in worldly riches. No longer interested in the horizontal, you press on for a higher goal: eternal life.

When earthly life does not yield riches, or even a modestly full pantry, you rejoice, for your joy is not found in temporal wealth or even in basics like food or shelter. Your joy is in the God of your salvation. (Hab 3:18) You put no claim on material goods; nor is even food your strength. Instead, you press on toward the goal of an upward call. (Phil 3:14)

When the earth does not yield its bounty to you and your legs tremble beneath you, your feet nevertheless become like a deer’s in the mountain passes. You travel now in higher places. (Hab 3:19) Rejoice in what you have obtained from God in Jesus Christ: citizenship in heaven. (Phil 3:20)
