From the Reformer
8. To a conscience acknowledging sin and confounded by the law, the gospel reveals Christ.
9. Thus John reveals Christ at the very time he preaches repentance: “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29)
10. The faith by which we believe the gospel showing us Christ and by which Christ is received as the one who has placated the Father and through whom grace is given, this faith is our righteousness. John 1:12: “But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become Children of God.”
—Philip Melancthon, Loci Communes Theologici
Pulling It Together
Though we hear faintly, we hear enough and are implored to respond with belief. “He who has ears, let him hear” (Matt 11:15) and, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” (Heb 4:7) When you have heard the mighty thunder of his judgment, hear the word of grace that follows and believe that God loves you, a sinner.
