Daily Reform, Day 194

Galatians 2:21 & 1 Peter 1:1-2

From the Reformer

In the midst of his discourse on Christian righteousness Paul breaks off, and turns to address the Galatians. “O foolish Galatians,” he cries. “I have brought you the true Gospel, and you received it with eagerness and gratitude. Now all of a sudden you drop the Gospel. What has got into you?”

—Martin Luther, Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians

Pulling It Together

He was amazed and perplexed. What could he say? In describing how justification works, Paul must have thought, “Why?” Why would anyone trade God’s free grace for bondage to the law? It did not make sense. It does not make sense today either. Yet people do it every single day. People insist that you have to do this or that in order to be right with God. What has gotten into us?
