Daily Reform, Day 200
Galatians 2:21 & Psalm 40:13-15
From the Reformer
In this sentence Paul excuses the Galatians, while he blames the false apostles for the apostasy of the Galatians.
As if he were saying: “I know your defection was not willful. The devil sent the false apostles to you, and they tallied you into believing that you are justified by the Law. With this our epistle we endeavor to undo the damage which the false apostles have inflicted upon you.”
—Martin Luther, Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians
Pulling It Together
In our own day, false apostles, bishops, and pastors lead the church astray. They have taught many of God’s people to accept that what is popular or culturally correct is God’s true doctrine. Unfortunately, there are fine, church-going folks who do not (and sometimes cannot) read the scriptures for themselves and trust those put into authority over them. This too, is not willful defection from the truth, but trusting souls being taken advantage of for cultural power. We must work hard “to undo the damage which the false apostles have inflicted upon” them.
