Daily Reform, Day 168
Galatians 2:20 & 1 Timothy 1:12-17
From the Reformer
Faith connects you so intimately with Christ that He and you become as it were one person. As such you may boldly say: “I am now one with Christ. Therefore Christ’s righteousness, victory, and life are mine.” On the other hand, Christ may say: “I am that big sinner. His sins and his death are mine, because he is joined to me, and I to him.”
—Martin Luther, Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians
Pulling It Together
Not only am I one with Christ but he is one with me. Poor guy. Luther says it best: Ryman is one big sinner. Yet Christ became one with me and died for the big sin in me. Just so, he died for this big sinner. My sin is his sin. My death is his death. And since Christ overcame sin and death, his righteousness over sin, victory over death, and eternal life are mine.
