When Life Happens

What is man that you are mindful of him? (Ps 8:4)

The next time you think the whole world is against you, consider your scale.

The earth seems like a very big place…

1

but as you move through our solar system, our planet becomes much smaller.

2

And in comparison to our own sun, we are very small indeed.

3

The rest of the universe is larger still…

4

and gets even larger:

Antares is a “supergiant” star in our own galaxy in the Scorpius constellation and is about 600 light years from our own solar system. Yet it is the 15th (or 16th) brightest star in our sky. It is 60,000 times brighter than our own sun. As you can see from the above graphic, it also much, much bigger than our sun…and the earth.

Here is Antares as seen through the “eye” of the Hubble space-telescope.

Yet there are bigger stars than even the supergiant Antares. This video shows a few more.

The next video really puts our universe into perspective.

You would have to travel at the speed of light (186,000+ miles per second) for 100,000 years to be able to see the entirety of our galaxy— the Milky Way.

There are about 30 galaxies in our local group of galaxies. And there are countless billions of these huge galaxies in our universe.

But here you are back on little, ol’ earth—not even a speck in our galaxy, let alone the universe. And you are but a speck upon the “speck.” Furthermore, you will only live there a very short while. (Ps 90:10)

You and I are very, very small indeed. One might even think s/he were insignificant against the grand scale of the universe.

Yet the Creator of the universe does not think of you as insignificant at all. In fact, Jesus said that God considers you to be of great value. (Luk 12:7) That is why God sent his Son to little earth, so that in the midst of his vast creation we would know how important we are to him: important enough to send his own Son to bring humanity back into friendship with its creator.

If God is “bigger” than the universe that he created, imagine the greatness of his love for you. The next time “life happens” to you and you think the whole universe is against you, remember the Creator of that universe is on your side. Like Job, you may not understand it, but then again, you can not understand…

For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
(Isaiah 55:9)
Trust God and hope even when you don’t understand what is happening. “For you, O Lord, are my trust, my hope…” (Ps 71:5)
